The
School of Biological Sciences at the University
of Liverpool brings together international
expertise that spans the breadth of life sciences.
The department builds on the long tradition
of research and teaching in the field of biological
sciences at Liverpool. In fact, the first
biochemistry department in the UK was established
in Liverpool and celebrated its centenary
in 2002.
The School of Biological Sciences was
inspected in 2004 as part of the
Institutional Audit carried out on behalf of
the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher
Education (QAA). The Audit looked not only
at the academic quality of courses but also
at the systems in place for ensuring their
delivery. The auditors spoke to students and
staff as well as inspecting reports from
External Examiners and examples of student
work. The following paragraph (139)
encapsulates much of what it has to say.
The School had recently undergone a
significant building development programme
to provide both new and refurbished
facilities, successfully achieved with
minimal disruption to teaching and learning
activities. The environment of the School is
now characterised by excellent learning
resources, well-designed to meet the
learning needs of students, and complemented
by library and IT provision greatly
appreciated by them for its availability and
quality, including a local intranet, as well
as the University's VLE (Virtual Learning
Environment). The students also endorsed the
high level of academic and personal support
they received from an enthusiastic and
well-qualified staff who incorporated their
involvement in high-quality research into
the taught programmes.
